AP Studio Art

The AP Art program at Skyline is designed to be completed in one year. There are no prerequisites for taking the class, but it is suggested that students have knowledge of, and practice in, a variety of painting and drawing mediums.

The AP Art portfolio consists of 24 pieces of art which are submitted to the AP Board at the end of the year.
Students work at home and in class developing their portfolio and should be prepared to commit 2 or more hours outside of class each week working on their art.

Students can choose to create a
drawing & painting portfolio, or a photography portfolio.

There are 3 parts to the AP Portfolio: Concentration, Breadth, and Quality
Concentration- 12 pieces
Twelve works describing an in-depth exploration of a particular concern. These are pieces that are unified by an underlying idea that has visual and/or conceptual coherence. Students may choose to use the same media for all 12 pieces or they can use a variety. Students choose their Concentration theme in December.
Concentration Examples

Breadth- 12 pieces
Twelve
works demonstrating your understanding of art making issues. Here students are making pieces which show the use of the Principles and Elements of Art. Students will work in a variety of media from painting and drawing to encaustic and printmaking. These pieces will be the focus for the first 3 months and then will be completed as the year progresses.
Breadth Examples

Quality- 5 pieces
Five pieces are chosen from the Concentration and/or Breadth and these actual pieces are sent to the AP Board.
All of the other work is submitted digitally.

For added art instruction, I highly recommend the Visual Art Institute in Sugarhouse.
